One of the major mortality risks for giant and stag beetles is hereby eliminated. The beetles no longer fall on their backs or struggle to death. The non-slip surface allows the beetles to move around extremely well, and they can find a foothold if they fall over. Spaces between the bark pieces allow the beetles to retreat underneath and rest. 

In addition, the bark pieces provide an excellent barrier to evaporation. The substrate hardly dries out and there is less need for re-wetting.

Of course, the bark pieces are also very decorative. Some pieces are overgrown with moss.
